Moderate to severe dryness can be uncomfortable and tiring in multiple ways, physically, visually, and emotionally. Many of us feel physically tired when our eyes feel dry.
Artificial tears temporarily soothe the symptoms, but only temporarily. There is a simple non-surgical procedure that provides long-term relief. It involves the use of permanent, yet removable silicone plugs called Punctal Plugs. They have a very high rate of success and they can be inserted easily and painlessly.

How punctal plugs work:
The plugs are inserted into your tear ducts (puncta) where they act as a dam. Therefore, your own natural tears are kept on the surface of your eye, instead of draining out.
Other treatment options can inculde: the prescription medication, Restasis; and treatment for any lid disease.
Some eyes may be chronically dry due to low grade inflammation present in the eye. This is especially common among patients with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren's disease, and patients who have had refractive surgery. Restasis works by decreasing inflammation in the eye.
Why treatment for lid disease?
The glands that produce your natural tear film, called meibomian glands, are located along your eyelid margins.
Any lid disease, such as blepharitis or meibomianitis, can affect the quality and quantity of tears that these glands produce. A healthy eyelid is necessary in order for the eye to have a healthy tear film.
