Why bother with retinal photography?

Many changes caused by eye diseases occur slowly and without obvious signs of discomfort or vision loss.  Such eye diseases include: glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure, tumours, and retinal holes.  It is important to diagnose these conditions before they start to permanently affect your vision.

Our office offers high resolution digital retinal photography, which uses a computer-integrated digital imaging system to record a detailed view of your retina.  This photograph provides an excellent reference point for future comparisons.  As a diagnostic tool, the digital camera enhances the detection of any abnormality, resulting in optimum patient care.

Why bother with visual field test?

Because you probably use both your eyes at all times, you may not know that there is a problem unless each eye's visual field is tested separately and in detail.   Your peripheral fields is dependent on: a healthy retina, a healthy optic nerve, and a healthy neural pathway that starts from the back of your brain and goes along your temporal lobes to your optic nerve. 

A disease that affects the temporal lobe and occipital lobe will also affect your peripheral vision.  Often, the optometrist is the first one to detect a problem with your carotid arteries or an impending stroke.  Other diseases that can affect your peripheral vision include: glaucoma, retinal diseases, pituitary tumor, optic nerve disease.

To help diagnose glaucoma as early as possible, we utilize the very latest advances in Visual Field Evaluation.

The Humphrey Matrix can detect early glaucoma damage years before other visual field technologies used in other eye care practice. 

Our Humphrey Matrix represents the latest development in the area of Glaucoma management. Using a Frequency Doubling Technique (FDT), this device enables the detection of visual field defects in their early stages.

The Humphrey Matrix targets particular types of cells that are very sensitive to movement therefore early cell damage is documented by reduced patient sensitivity to a flickering pattern.

Many studies have demonstrated that FDT perimetry is able to detect the visual field losses produced by glaucoma and other ocular and/or neurologic disorders with higher sensitivity and specificity than other perimeters. An abundance of evidence now indicates that FDT perimctry has many advantages for detecting visual field loss.
